>starting a board afresh is not really realistic nowadays.
you are here and posting though, arent you?
>How would you feel about just branching off arisuchan.jp data?
i had thought of "branching" their data when i first made this site and decided against it
off the top of my head, some of the issues i have with it are:
> there are boards there that dont exist here and i dont want them to exist here (like /ru/ for example, im not going to moderate that and neither are my people)
> i dont want the original sites admins/mods messages on my site (i cant realistically go through the old sites mod/admins posts to make sure they reflect the current sites ideals/rules/etc)
> same goes for discussion about the old site, a huge chunk of (if not all of) /q/ from arisuchan.jp would not make any sense being here
> its a decent chunk of data, although it is "normalized" that html was built via a slightly different website engine - theres always the possibility a "backwards" (from html to sql) migration process becomes painful - and if that happens, data normalization and testing could outweigh the benefit of migration in the first place (i dont personally see much benefit to begin with)
hypothetically, it would not be extremely difficult, as youve theorized - there are a few options if i wanted to go this route. having a DB dump of the original site would essentially negate that last point i made above regarding potential headaches but - ive never spoken to any of the original arisuchan.jp staff - never had a reason to (if any of them are reading this and want to have something to do with the new site, you are welcome to come chat with me about this in IRC, maybe we can come up with some interesting ideas)
generally speaking though, at the very least i think it would make the site feel pretty messy for end users as well as moderators - its one thing if good quality threads and posts from the old site made it here, but any and all problems from the old site would be coming here too (or at the very least would just become confusing being here) - my goal was to make a NEW arisuchan - not to take over the old one - i dont think i want to maintain the old sites data on my new site - the old posts already have a home, anyways
lastly and maybe even most importantly, i dont see great benefit in new posters replying to threads whos last reply was from 2017-2019 - its not like the people they are replying to are engaged in those conversations anymore - many of those threads and replies are nearly 10 years old now
it seems like a number of recent posts here have been about how to enhance or change this site - i appreciate the thoughtfulness and suggestions in regard to that but, the best thing you can do to contribute to this community is to just post here like you used to on arisuchan.jp
tl;dr -
make threads about interesting topics, reply to threads, etc
if someone really wants to continue a thread from arisuchan.jp here they are free to do so
i dont think theres good reason to migrate the old sites data here
that would probably feel a bit more like a "zombie-apocalypse" than a "resurrection"

Ah, I see, cool.
I personally am more of an "internet researcher", i.e. I like sometimes to read archives, etc.
For me, it's perhaps akin to archeology as a science, etc. Discovering what was the spirit of a certain period of time.
I find posting new threads not as engaging as the journey of discovering the old stuff.
Anyway, it was an interesting discussion. 👍
