Design theory, educational resources, ideas, and schools of thought
did you go to art school? time to put your parents money to use!!!

<this is a place for discussion, sharing books/literature related to design, thoughts, opinions, general recommendations, industry and amateur knowledge, examples, references - etc.

do you fall into one of these categories?
- i make things but have a hard time making them look "right"
- i am a professional in the creative industry and want to share my knowledge
- i am an amateur looking to chat with peers
- i am an art appreciator and want to discuss my hobby
- i dont know anything about art/design theory but im curious to learn

Here are some design books i consider essential reading/reference:

- Interaction of Color by Josef Albers
1963 masterwork in art education and color theory that demonstrates how colors change and influence one another based on their neighboring context.

- Design and Form: The Basic Course at the Bauhaus by Johannes Itten
1963/1975 book by Bauhaus master Johannes Itten that documents the foundational preliminary course (Vorkurs) he created at the Weimar Bauhaus in 1919.

- The Elements of Graphic Design: Space, Unity, Page Architecture, and Type by Alex W. White
Explores visual communication through the strategic use of space rather than just decoration.

- Grid Systems in Graphic Design by Josef Müller-Brockmann
1981 visual communication manual that teaches designers how to organize information logically and consistently using structured grid frameworks.

- Basic Principles of Design by Manfred Maier
Documents the famous foundation program at the School of Design Basel, Switzerland, translating the school's core design pedagogy into an extensive four-volume set (i included volume 1 in this post)
